Title: Edmonton to Calgary aboard a CH-146 Griffon to visit Harold Kearl
Post by: Olatunbosun on 2025-03-11 09:25
The 408 Tactical Helicopter Squadron (THS) made the journey from Edmonton to Calgary aboard a CH-146 Griffon to visit Harold Kearl, a remarkable 102-year-old WWII veteran closely connected to 408 THS.

Harold's brother, Eldon Kearl, served as a bomber pilot with 408 THS during the war. Sadly, Eldon lost his life when his Lancaster was shot down over Germany in January 1944. Meanwhile, back in Canada, Harold was nearing the end of his flying training, ready to follow the path his brother had taken in serving their country. Unlike Eldon, Harold made it through the war. In a profound effort to honor his brother's memory, he undertook a perilous journey through Russian-occupied East Germany after the war, determined to locate Eldon's final resting place—a mission he accomplished thanks to a translated letter.

Harold graciously welcomed 408 THS into his home, where he still lives independently, and shared captivating stories from his time in service. The squadron felt privileged to express their gratitude for the sacrifices made by both him and Eldon, while also capturing their conversation to help ensure that the legacy of the Kearl brothers is preserved. Lest we forget.
