Robert David Reitmeier, who was convicted in 2013 of second-degree murder for the 2010 killing of Mark Mariani, will be allowed to leave the prison during this period, during which he is expected to participate in a program four days each week.

In an interview with Global News, Reitmeier expressed his intention to utilize his free time for physical fitness and to explore the city of Victoria.

Currently in the later stages of his life sentence, Reitmeier received a life sentence with a 13-year period of ineligibility for parole.

He will be eligible for full parole in December 2026. This release is part of a structured reintegration initiative designed to assess inmates' preparedness for reintegration into society, although specific details regarding supervision and conditions have not been made public.

Reitmeier and his accomplice, Tyler Sturrup, were affiliated with a white supremacist organization known as the Western European Bloodline (WEB) when they viciously assaulted 47-year-old Mark Mariani in a Calgary alley on October 3, 2010.

Mariani, who had been living with Crohn's disease for over 25 years, had paused in the alley to empty his ostomy bag after a visit to a video rental store.

At that moment, Reitmeier and Sturrup were engaged in spray-painting graffiti. Without any provocation, they savagely stomped and kicked him, resulting in severe fractures to his skull and ribs before abandoning him.

Despite his critical injuries, Mariani managed to crawl to his vehicle, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Reitmeier's transfer to the William Head Institution and his subsequent temporary release represent a significant step towards possible parole consideration. man sentenced for a violent murder in Calgary has been approved for a 60-day unescorted temporary absence (UTA) from the William Head Institution, a minimum-security federal facility located in Metchosin.
