Europe is facing a "once in a generation" moment for security, according to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Speaking at the Ukraine summit, Starmer emphasized the importance of unity among European nations in addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the broader security challenges posed by Russia. He highlighted the need for increased military support for Ukraine, as well as intensified economic pressure on Russia to deter future aggression.
The summit, held at Lancaster House in London, brought together leaders from Germany, France, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Turkey, Finland, Sweden, Czechia, and Romania. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and officials from the European Commission and European Council also attended. The agenda included discussions on defining security arrangements to protect Europe and support Ukraine.
Starmer also announced that Ukraine had signed an agreement with the UK allowing access to revenues generated by Russian financial assets frozen in Britain. This move is part of a broader European strategy to strengthen Kyiv's financial position and support its efforts to resist Russian aggression. The British leader expressed confidence in US President Donald Trump's stated desire for peace, despite the US president's reluctance to commit to further military support.
The summit underscored the critical need for European nations to work together in addressing the security challenges posed by Russia and supporting Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty and stability.
