Braid: Heartbreaking accounts highlight the necessity of UCP's "compassionate intervention" for addicts.

 Treatment without consent occurs frequently. A reporter who enters a government press conference looking for scandal rarely leaves with a broken heart. Premier Danielle Smith's announcement on Monday that two "compassionate intervention" centres would be built for severely vulnerable, endangered addicts made me feel that way. The ongoing tale, the controversy surrounding a dismissed AHS CEO, and claims of political favouritism in contracts captivated reporters like myself. However, the remarks of Earl Theissen, executive director of Oxford House, a facility that assists addicts in finding sober living, and Amy Schiffner, the mother of an addicted son, troubled me.

"How could anybody hear what these people say without choking up — and understanding, after years of false compassion, why some addicted people need to be forced into treatment both for their survival and the safety of others?"
