Reps advise NAFDAC to protect innocent businesses in the fight against counterfeit medications.

NAFDAC DG.The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) was urged by the House of Representatives on Wednesday to make sure that innocent merchants in recently closed drug marketplaces are not unjustly impacted. The House emphasized the need to protect the livelihoods of legal sellers and instructed its Committee on NAFDAC to look into issues regarding the widespread market clampdown. The resolution came after Victor Afam Ogene (LP, Anambra) sponsored a motion of urgent public concern urging NAFDAC to be cautious in its enforcement efforts. Ogene praised the organization's efforts to combat fake medications, but pointed out that the recent closure of the drug markets in Idumota (Lagos), Ariaria (Aba), and Onitsha (Anambra) had resulted in financial losses for a large number of honest dealers.NAFDAC expands its efforts to combat counterfeit medications.

He underlined that while it's important to stop the sale of counterfeit and inferior medications, honest company owners shouldn't have to endure unfair hardship. He voiced alarm about claims that NAFDAC closed the impacted marketplaces and prevented traders and their leaders from entering, while its agents broke into stores and took medications without letting the store owners observe the process or take stock.
