Canada's easternmost province, Newfoundland and Labrador, is situated on the Atlantic coast. It is made up of Labrador's mainland and Newfoundland Island. One of the oldest cities in North America is St. John's, the capital. Climate and Geography Labrador is home to enormous tundra and boreal forests, while Newfoundland is a hilly island with a rocky shoreline. With chilly winters and cool summers, the climate varies from oceanic in Newfoundland to subarctic in Labrador. Culture and History The Inuit and Mi'kmaq peoples call the province home, and it has a rich Indigenous history in addition to significant European influences, especially English and Irish. According to archeological findings, it was the first place in North America that the Vikings visited L'Anse aux Meadows is still there. It was declared the tenth province of Canada in 1949. The economy The economy, which has historically been dependent on fishing, has expanded into mining, offshore oil extraction, hydroelectric generation, and tourism. Tourist Destinations The Viking Trail at L'Anse aux Meadows, the historic city of St. John's, Gros Morne National Park, and chances to spot whales and icebergs along the Atlantic coast are some of the top attractions.
