U.S. Intelligence officials warned German authorities earlier this year that Russia was planning an assassination of the head of Europe's largest arms producer, according to two Western officials, as Moscow waged a growing sabotage campaign to drive up the cost of Western support for Ukraine.
Western officials said the alleged plot to kill Armin Papperger, the head of Rheinmetall, a major German arms maker that was a key supplier of artillery shells and tanks to Ukraine, was part of the country's widening hybrid war against the West. The warning to Germans about the plot, first reported by CNN on Thursday, was issued by the United States earlier this year, these officials said.
