The RCMP is committed to using all available technology and resources to secure the Canada-United States border. This includes aircraft with advanced thermal imaging capabilities to detect illegal activity near the border. The RCMP will also continue to work closely with its law enforcement partners in the United States to ensure that information is shared quickly to provide a coordinated response to any border incursions.
At 7:30 PM on January 14, 2025, a group of six individuals were seen approaching the Manitoba border, approximately 15 km east of Emerson. An RCMP aircraft equipped with a thermal imaging system was actively patrolling the border and quickly located the six individuals and directed ground units to the location. RCMP officers in vehicles responded immediately and began searching for the group who had fled into a wooded area. With RCMP aircraft directing officers on the ground, the six individuals were arrested without incident (1 Jordanian, 3 Sudanese, 1 Chadian and 1 Mauritanian) and transferred to the Canada Border Services Agency.
"We want to be clear. We have the partners, technology and resources in place to intervene at the border and stop illegal activity," said Assistant Commissioner Lisa Moreland, Regional Commander, Northwest Region, Federal Police, RCMP. "By working closely with the Canada Border Services Agency and our provincial and U.S. law enforcement partners, we can detect and stop those attempting to cross our shared border."
