Excluding gas exports, the United States actually sells more to Canada than Canada sells to the United States.

As I have told every American politician I have met in recent months, Canada buys more from the United States than any other country in the world - more than the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Vietnam combined. There is therefore no economic justification for imposing tariffs on Canadian products. Alberta will continue its diplomatic efforts in the United States to persuade the President of the United States, lawmakers, administration officials and the American people to remove all tariffs on Canadian goods as soon as possible and repair our relationship with the United States. I encourage all premiers and federal officials to do the same, especially as the effects of these tariffs are beginning to be felt south of the border. Americans must understand the dire consequences of this policy decision.
Alberta will also work with the federal government and other provinces to find a proportionate response to the U.S. tariffs, strategically targeting Canadian tariffs on U.S. products that are more readily sourced from Canadian suppliers, rather than the United States. This will minimize costs to Canadian consumers while creating maximum impact south of the border. All funds raised through these tariffs should go directly to Canadians most affected by U.S. tariffs.
Alberta, however, will continue to strongly oppose any attempt to ban exports to the United States or to tax our citizens and businesses on products that leave Canada for the United States. Such tactics would make Canadians far worse off than Americans.
We also continue to call on Alberta to designate a Border Patrol to coordinate the security of our border against illegal immigration and drug trafficking in both directions and to fulfill our country's NATO commitment to spend 2% of GDP on border security by 2027. This is a commitment that must be made for the security of all Canadians, regardless of our trade dispute with the United States.
Despite the disappointment of today's decision, an incredible opportunity awaits us as a nation. Canada can and must now join in an unprecedented effort to preserve the lives and futures of our people and to expand our political and commercial relationships around the world. We can no longer afford to be so dependent on a single major client. We must stop limiting our own prosperity and causing ourselves economic harm.
Instead, we need to unleash the true economic potential
