President Trump's suspension of foreign aid to many countries, especially in Africa, is a good thing. It will force us, as black Africans, to look inward and by looking inward, we will find local solutions to our problems. Necessity is the mother of invention!
It is like refusing to breastfeed your child or constantly giving him a bottle. That child will have a hard time weaning and maturing.
President Trump and the United States are focusing on their domestic problems under an America First policy. We, as Africans, should also focus on Africa as a priority. But when we offer visa-free access to Europeans, Americans and Canadians, but impose heavy visa burdens on our African peers and trade more with other races than with ourselves, we should not complain when Trump does what he has to do.
Every year, the African continent earns about $3.2 billion from coffee and cocoa exports, mostly to Europe, while Germany earns $4 billion from the re-export of refined coffee and cocoa from Africa.
That is how they receive the aid they give us.
