While it's unclear who fired the fatal shot that killed Maland, court documents show that Youngblut pointed a gun at Maland during the confrontation. After the shooting, a Glock 23 .40-caliber pistol was found on the defendant's person and two .40-caliber casings were found in the driver's side of the vehicle where Youngblut was.
The guns found at the scene of the shooting were purchased by an individual believed to be a resident of Orleans, Vermont. The guns were allegedly purchased from a federal firearms license holder in Mount Tabor, Vermont, in February 2024, according to serial numbers. The person is also a person of interest in a double homicide investigation in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, according to the documents.

The document says Youngblut and the other person who bought the guns in Vermont that she and Bauckholt had with them at the time of the shooting had frequent contact with a person who was in custody in Pennsylvania during the murder investigation. The same person is also a person of interest in a homicide investigation in Vallejo, California, according to the motion.
The vehicle Youngblut and Bauckholt were driving was registered to Bauckholt in North Carolina. The documents also show that Youngblut traveled abroad in 2022, 2023 and 2024. A diary found in the vehicle believed to belong to Youngblut also referred to drug use, but there was no direct evidence of substance abuse, the court heard. Several sentences in the diary referred to the use of hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD and "acid" and their effects.
