An Alberta government task force has endorsed Smith's skepticism about vaccine safety, as well as his distrust of Jason Kenney's handling of the pandemic.
A task force created by the Alberta government is calling for a halt to the use of COVID-19 vaccines, citing insufficient data on their risks.
In the fall of 2022, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith directed her then-health minister to review pandemic data and make recommendations.
The findings of the $2 million task force confirmed Smith's skepticism about her predecessor's handling of the pandemic, as well as safety concerns surrounding vaccines. He supported ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine as alternative forms of treatment. 42% of 42,000 Albertans given COVID-19 vaccine were not at risk of contracting COVID-19.

The Task Force recommended halting COVID-19 vaccines without full disclosure of their potential risks and ending their use in healthy children and adolescents, the Globe and Mail reported.
It also suggested continuing research on their effectiveness, creating support for those affected by vaccines, and providing an opt-out mechanism from federal public health policy. Shortly after being elected leader of the United Conservative Party, Smith called unvaccinated Canadians "the most discriminated group" she had ever seen, sparking a public backlash.
The committee recommended protections for "public discussion of alternative medical treatments" under the provincial human rights act.
It also recommended that the government monitor regulators to prevent them from using "professionalism or codes of conduct" to prevent the use of alternative treatments, including drugs approved for off-label use. Committee members suggested that no disciplinary action be taken against health-care workers who promote or use these drugs.
The province has been reviewing the report since August, and a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health had not made any decisions on the recommendations at the time of publication. "Their recommendations provide perspective on how the government can be better positioned to protect the health and safety of Albertans going forward," the spokesperson said.
