Dangote's Tomato Revolution 🍅 in Nigeria 🇳🇬
Dangote Group has unveiled Africa's largest tomato processing plant in northern Nigeria, a $20 million, five-year project.
This innovative initiative aims to reduce Nigeria's heavy reliance on imported tomato paste, create jobs and boost local agriculture.
By 2022, Nigeria, Africa's largest importer of tomato paste, imported about 300,000 tonnes, spending about $350 million annually, mainly from China 🇨🇳.
The Dangote factory is expected to process 400,000 tonnes of tomato paste per year, filling the deficit and allowing the country to meet domestic demand while producing a surplus for export.
Despite being the second largest tomato producer in Africa after Egypt 🇪🇬, with 1.8 million tons per year, Nigeria loses almost 40% of its production due to post-harvest problems, such as poor storage and transportation. To address this, the Dangote Group has also established a giant greenhouse nursery capable of producing 300 tons of hybrid tomato plants per year, providing farmers with high-quality inputs and improving production.
This initiative marks a major step towards agricultural self-sufficiency and sustainability in Nigeria. Africa is changing 🎉.
