Alberta Health Services (AHS) has ordered the closure of a restaurant in Calgary's Chinatown due to a 'significant' cockroach infestation.
The closure notice, issued on January 17, says the Ho Won restaurant on 2nd Avenue SE is infested with German cockroaches and follows six inspections of the restaurant between February 2022 and January 2025, during which inspectors noted numerous violations. Violations listed in the closure notice include cockroaches on countertops, walls and equipment, as well as feces and egg cartons throughout the facility.
AHS says inspectors noticed a gap in the bottom of an exterior back door and say there was no pest monitoring program at the restaurant.
In addition to the cockroach infestation, a number of other violations were found, including heavily soiled reusable cleaning cloths seen directly on food contact surfaces, stored food uncovered directly on the floor in the walk-in cooler, and multiple cracked floors and ceilings. or with debris. and water damage.
AHS outlined extensive cleaning, sanitation and repair requirements and said a comprehensive pest management plan, which could include an exterminator, must be in place before the restaurant can reopen.
