January 2025 marks the 16th annual celebration of Tamil Heritage Month in Canada. This month, we reflect :-\ on the living history of Tamil Canadians and recognize the significant and ongoing contributions they have made to Canada.
January is an important month for the Tamil community, as it marks the beginning of the Tamil harvest festival, also known as Thai Pongal. Thai Pongal is a festival of thanksgiving. It is a time when friends and families gather and prepare Pongal, a traditional dish made with rice and milk. Pongal represents prosperity and good fortune for the coming year.
Tamil Heritage Month is an opportunity for Canadians to learn more about Tamil culture and heritage and to reflect on their ongoing contributions to our society. The LESA team wishes a Happy Thai Pongal to all who celebrate.
As we celebrate each other's cultures, traditions and histories, and as more workplaces develop anti-racist policies and seek to change their systems and culture, it is imperative that lawyers who deal with employment, human rights or gender discrimination issues remain compliant with relevant law and practice. Our upcoming webinar on Combating Racism in Employment Law Practice will explore relevant human rights case law and practical strategies for policies, employee training and reporting systems through the lens of bias and cognitive theory.
