The Alberta RCMP is advising drivers not to travel on Highway 2 between Edmonton and Calgary Tuesday evening due to what they are describing as "severe weather conditions."
Environment Canada issued a blizzard warning for much of central Alberta on Tuesday, noting that strong winds and blowing snow are leading to poor driving conditions and, at times, near-zero visibility.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve overnight, the weather agency said, although narrow bands of snow could persist into the morning and localized accumulations of 5 to 10 centimetres of snow are possible.
In a news release, RCMP said a traffic advisory and towing is in effect on the Highway 2 corridor between Edmonton and Blackfalds, north of Red Deer.
"Due to deteriorating weather conditions, towing operations will be suspended," the news release said.
Earlier Tuesday, RCMP said road conditions "are extremely poor, particularly in Leduc, Wetaskiwin, Camrose County, Maskwacis, Ponoka and surrounding areas of Edmonton."
Police said officers responded to multiple crashes and rollovers. RCMP advised drivers to monitor Alberta 511 for updates on road conditions
