At least 10 killed, dozens wounded in Israeli attacks on Jenin
Ten dead and more than 35 wounded, Palestinian health ministry says, as violence escalates in occupied West Bank.
At least 10 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks across the occupied West Bank province of Jenin, the Palestinian health ministry said.
The Israeli military said earlier on Tuesday that soldiers, police and intelligence services had launched an "anti-terrorism operation," but gave no further details.
The identities of those killed were not immediately clear. The health ministry said more than 35 people were wounded. A spokesman for the Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces said in a statement that Israeli forces "opened fire on civilians and security forces, wounding several civilians and a number of security personnel, one of whom is in critical condition."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the operation was aimed at "eradicating terrorism." An Israeli military spokesman said the ongoing operation was codenamed "Iron Wall."
Jenin Governor Kamal Abu al-Rub called the action an "invasion," according to the AFP news agency.
"This happened quickly," he said. "Apache jets in the sky and Israeli military vehicles everywhere." ยป
The attack on Jenin, where the Israeli military has carried out numerous large-scale raids and incursions in recent years, comes days after a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip came into effect and highlighted the threats of more violence in the West Bank.
Prior to the Israeli action, PA security forces conducted a week-long operation to retake the city of Jenin, as well as its refugee camp.
Last week, an Israeli airstrike on the refugee camp killed at least three Palestinians and injured many more.
On Monday, Israeli settlers set fire to vehicles and property under the protection of Israeli forces, while injuring at least 21 Palestinians in the West Bank.
The Israeli military said it had opened an investigation into the incident, which it said involved dozens of Israeli civilians, some masked. Violence has increased across the West Bank since Israel began its war in Gaza on October 7, 2023.
Israeli troops or settlers have killed at least 847 Palestinians in the West Bank since the start of the Gaza war, according to the Health Ministry.
At least 29 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks or Israeli military strikes on the territory during the same period, according to Israeli figures.
