A young woman suffered life-changing injuries after being hit by a garbage truck in downtown Calgary on Friday morning.
Emergency crews were called to 6th Avenue and 4th Street SE around 9:45 a.m. for reports of a pedestrian accident.
Investigators say a garbage truck was traveling north on 4th Street when it stopped at a red light. When the light turned green, the truck attempted to make a left turn onto 6th Avenue as a woman entered the roadway.
Police say the woman, a teenager, was struck by the driver's side of the truck.
Paramedics said she was taken to Foothills Medical Center in critical condition. Police later confirmed that she suffered life-threatening injuries and remains in the hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the garbage truck remained at the scene and was not injured. The intersection of 6th Avenue and 4th Street SE was closed for several hours, but reopened shortly before 3 p.m.
Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the collision, but say damage or speed are not believed to be factors.
