Taxpayer refund checks now being sent to Ontario families.
A $200 payment will be sent to every eligible taxpayer and child in Ontario
Toronto - The Ontario government has begun issuing $200 tax refund checks to provincial taxpayers, as well as each of their eligible children, to help cover the high cost of the federal carbon tax and high interest rates. The checks should reach families in the coming weeks.
"As Ontario families grapple with the federal carbon tax, high interest rates and global economic uncertainty, our government is stepping up as part of our ongoing work to reduce costs and help families afford to pay their bills. "Our careful fiscal management means our government is able to provide this essential support to families, even as we continue to improve Ontario's finances and invest in our world-class public services."
Cheques are being mailed to all Ontario residents eligible for the taxpayer refund. To qualify for the refund, you must be 18 years of age or older and an Ontario resident as of December 31, 2023, not bankrupt or incarcerated in 2024, and have filed a 2023 income tax return by December 31, 2024.
Families who qualify for the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) payment will also receive a separate cheque of $200 for each eligible child under the age of 18. For example, a family of five, consisting of two adults and three children, receives $1,000.
Ontarians can track the status of their eligible checks online.

In the case of joint custody of a child, payments will be divided based on the last available Canada Child Benefit (CCB) benefit. For families with children who did not receive the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) for 2024, the government is offering the option of receiving a $200 refund per child. Details will be announced in the coming weeks. In December 2024, SandP Global upgraded Ontario's credit rating, giving the government its second upgrade in six months. An improvement in the government's credit rating is a positive reflection of its fiscal management.
