Cuba submits a request to participate in the genocide case of South Africa against Israel at the ICJ
Cuba has filed a statement that it will join South Africa's genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, the court announced Monday.
"Cuba, referring to article 63 of the Statute of the Court, has presented in the Registry of the Court a declaration of intervention in the case concerning the Application of the Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in Gaza", the court. he said in a statement.
In December 2023, South Africa initiated proceedings against Israel, alleging violations of the Genocide Convention against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Several countries have since joined the cause, including Nicaragua, Colombia, Libya, Mexico, Palestine, Spain and Turkey.
Israel has continued its brutal offensive against Gaza since the Hamas attack in October 2023, despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire. Nearly 46,600 people, mostly women and children, have been killed since then and more than 105,000 have been injured, according to local health authorities. The Israeli offensive has displaced almost the entire population of the territory amid a continuing blockade that has led to severe shortages of food, clean water and medicine, rendering much of the strip an uninhabitable desert.
