Real Madrid opened the scoring with Kylian Mbappe's first goal, but Hansi Flick's Barcelona responded with a devastating counterattack.
The Catalans picked up the pace, scoring four goals before the break through Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Alejandro Balde. They picked up where they left off after the break, with Raphinha scoring the second goal to make it 5-1. A glimmer of hope appeared for Carlo Ancelotti's side when Wojciech Szczęsny was booked and Rodrygo capitalised on the resulting free-kick to reduce the score to 5-2.
A disappointed Ancelotti criticised his team's defence that night, admitting that their opponents had played better defensively. He then praised Mbappe, saying the summer signing was a bright spot on a dark cloud.
"You have to defend well to win these games." Barcelona deserved to win; "They defended better than us," said Carlo. "The team is not in good shape, but I won't point the finger at anyone. Mbappé had a good game, maybe he was the only one. He scored a goal.
"I won't name names, but we weren't good from the first minute and we didn't do well.
