BC Conservatives make shocking allegations of 'voter suppression' in 2024 election
BC Conservatives made damning allegations Thursday that could spell trouble for the incumbent New Democrats, if proven true.
Non-Canadian citizens voting and potential voters who were told they couldn't vote — because their ballot had already been cast — are just a few examples of alleged voting irregularities in the recent British Columbia election. These discrepancies could have changed the outcome of the election, with the New Democrats holding a one-seat majority as of this writing.
The BC Conservative Party called for an independent review of the election and the BC Elections Commission on Thursday. "I will seek an independent review to provide an opportunity for the public to raise their concerns," said John Rustad, the party's leader. In November, Elections BC issued a statement acknowledging discrepancies in more than 60 of the province's 93 ridings. The revelation comes after an internal audit forced the agency to make corrections in 69 electoral districts.
A review of the vote found 45 irregularities, including 21 votes allegedly cast from Argyll Lodge, a nursing home across from a polling station in Surrey-Guilford. Incumbent NDP MPP Garry Begg won by 22 votes, after a judicial recount.
Honveer Singh Randhawa, a trained lawyer, says he has received statements from residents who say they were forced to vote by mail. Rebel News asked the party leader if the home-based vote, among other concerns, would be addressed. "These are all things that I hope [will be] part of the independent review," he said.
Among those concerns are "stories of non-Canadian citizens voting in this election," Rustad said, acknowledging that "that's something we can't verify because no one is coming forward."
However, the Surrey-Guildford result wasn't the only horse under scrutiny.
Particularly troubling, Elections BC found 861 votes cast in the riding of Prince George Mackenzie, a Conservative stronghold.
Rustad's findings, if accurate, could cast doubt on the Surrey-Guildford result and jeopardize the legitimacy of the incumbent NDP government. These allegations may also reinforce the need for an independent review of their oversight during the election.
