Federal Government Approves Ban on LGBT, Tattoos, and Homosexuality in the Military.
The Federal. Government has banned Nigerian military personnel from engaging in homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, cross-dressing and other activities deemed to be against the ethics of the armed forces.
In addition, service members are prohibited from piercing their bodies, getting tattoos, engaging in disorderly conduct, drinking alcohol on or off duty, and having romantic relationships with subordinates or spouses.
These guidelines are outlined in Section 26 of the Harmonized General Conditions of Service of the Armed Forces, approved by President Bola Tinubu on December 16, 2024.
Part of the document reads: "An officer shall not engage in homosexuality, lesbianism or bestiality. It is also prohibited to participate in activities related to the LGBTQIA2S+ community or intermarry.
The rules extend to financial and legal obligations, requiring officers to promptly pay dues such as driver's licenses and insurance. Failure to comply with these obligations or issuing checks without sufficient funds is considered a serious violation.
Officers are also prohibited from joining secret societies or political parties, misusing government property, engaging in private business, or accepting gifts and favors from subordinate colleagues.
The document also warns that misuse of government resources or actions that could bring discredit to the armed forces are strictly prohibited. However, specific disciplinary measures for violations of these rules are not announced.
