The employee, aged 50, was attacked at Royal Oldham Hospital
An employee, believed to be a nurse, was seriously injured in a knife attack at a hospital.
The woman, in her 50s, was seriously injured in a knife attack at Royal Oldham Hospital at around 23:30 GMT on Saturday.
A member of the public is believed to have attacked him with a sharp instrument which was not a knife, Greater Manchester Police said. She remains in the hospital for treatment.
A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is in police custody. Detective Sergeant Craig Roters appealed for information, adding: "We know that news of this nature will be shocking.
"The local community can expect to see an increased police presence as we carry out our investigations, but we are also here to reassure you and answer any questions you may have."
Jim McMahon, MP for Oldham West, described the attack as a "senseless attack."
In a post on social media, he said: "Our thoughts are with the nurse, her family and friends as we wish her a full recovery."
