Ontario's police chief is criticizing an Ontario judge's decision to postpone the prison sentence of a man involved in a $38 million drug racket until his co-accused wife gives birth to their first child.
In Canada alone, a man — Marvin Watson of Toronto — convicted of a major drug operation has been given a seven-month suspended sentence before it is known how much time he will spend in prison.
Watson, 33, and Maria Kiguru, 35, who both pleaded guilty to their roles in a methamphetamine and cocaine smuggling ring, are receiving this special child benefit offered by the Ontario justice system.
The mother of two other children, whose father is not Watson, pleaded guilty to laundering the proceeds of crime and was given a suspended sentence, meaning as long as she follows the guidelines, she will not serve any jail time.
Meanwhile, the father-to-be was given a courtesy that could be extended to the mother-to-be, but not to fathers in general. "They greatly appreciate this position that allows them to spend this precious time together while having their first child," Watson's lawyer Frank Retar told the court Tuesday, according to CBC Windsor.
