Former MP condemns Coutts protesters' charge: Is the Charter still relevant? Today I am in court in Lethbridge, Alberta, covering the sentencing hearing for the Coutts trio, Alex Van Herk, Marco Van Huginboss and George Thompson. These three men, farmers, fathers and passionate Canadians, face up to 10 years in prison. In an exclusive interview with @MediaBezirgan, former MP and police officer Art Hanger criticized the indictment and questioned whether the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, as well as the Bill of Rights, still have any relevance.
He noted: "I wonder if these pieces of paper or these documents are important, you know, because we're talking about the state putting restrictions on rights – God-given rights – that the Charter is supposed to protect and the state has overstepped them."
The hearing is ongoing and is expected to conclude tomorrow with possible prison sentences for the three people. Follow and support @MediaBezirgan for more journalism on the ground.
