Donald Trump Appears Remotely for Sentencing Hearing in New York State
Briefing
The new US President Donald Trump has been sentenced to "unconditional release," meaning he is exempt from jail time and a fine.
He appeared impatient, sitting next to his lawyer via video link in a New York courtroom, our court reporter writes.
The prosecution asked for no prison time, no probation, and no fines as punishment — exactly what the judge ordered.
Trump said it had been "a horrible experience" and that he was "completely innocent," while his lawyer said the charges should never have been filed.
Judge Merchan called it an "extraordinary case" and a paradox with many precautions but ordinary legal procedures.
Last May, Trump was convicted on 34 counts related to money he paid to movie star Stormy Daniels to raise money and how the payments were later disbursed.

He is located in Florida, but appeared via video link in the New York courtroom.
He spoke for several minutes, declaring his innocence and protesting the case.
"This is a political witch hunt," he said, before discussing his election victory.
