John Rustad, leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia, says his party has uncovered what he calls voting irregularities in the crucial Surrey-Guildford riding, where the margin of victory was just 22 votes, giving the province to the New Democrats.
Mr. Rustad says his party has reviewed several reports of problems that arose during the fall election. He says his party has uncovered what he calls a series of irregularities in the election.
"Part of it is the way the vote went to nursing homes, part of it is people who didn't live in the riding, part of it is people who voted twice, and there are other elements, so there are still a lot of things we see," Rustad said. "For example, we have received numerous reports of people who are not Canadian citizens (who) voted in this election, people who are not Canadian citizens who received an invitation from Elections BC to vote."
"There are care facilities where some people have not even requested a vote by mail, but they have been asked to fill out a ballot — in some cases they did not know what it was, or who they were 'voting' for,'" Rustad told the News when asked about the nature of the concerns in care facilities. "I think what's concerning is that we've heard of senior care facilities in other ridings where similar things have happened, but we need to investigate further before we can give any more details," he added.
Rustad said Wednesday that his team was conducting further investigation into the alleged irregularities.
"So there's a lot of things we need to look at; there's more research we need to do," he said.
He said his party is reiterating its calls for an independent review of Elections BC, ideally led by retired judges.
Rustad says his party has uncovered more than 22 irregularities — Begg's margin of victory — in the Surrey-Guildford riding. Rustad also said some form of legal challenge to the results in the riding, narrowly won by Garry Begg, is being considered.
Rustad and the BC Conservative candidate for the riding, Honveer Singh Randhawa, will hold a press conference at the BC legislature.
