Abubakar Tafawa Balewa offered Obafemi Awolowo the position of Deputy Prime Minister of Nigeria in March 1962. Awolowo declined it. He was subsequently offered the post of Deputy Governor-General by Nnamdi Azikiwe in August 1962. This offer was also turned down by Awolowo. When reflecting on these choices, Awolowo wrote: "I declined the two offers because they were designed exclusively to gratify my self-interest, with no thought of fostering any political moral principle which could benefit the people of Nigeria."
