Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2024, at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family. He was 100 years old, making him the longest-lived president in U.S. history ¹.
Carter is survived by his children, Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy, as well as 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. His wife, Rosalynn Carter, passed away on November 19, 2023, after 77 years of marriage, the longest of any first couple in U.S. history ².
Carter's legacy extends far beyond his presidency. He was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his work in finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts, advancing democracy and human rights, and promoting economic and social development. He also founded the Carter Center with his wife in 1982, which has helped improve life for people in over 80 countries ¹.
As president, Carter dealt with the energy shortage in the United States by establishing a national energy policy and deregulating domestic petroleum prices. He also promoted government efficiency through civil service reform and proceeded with deregulation of the trucking and airline industries. Additionally, he sought to improve the environment by expanding the national park system, including protection of 103 million acres of Alaskan lands ².
Carter's son, Chip, remembered him as a hero who embodied peace, human rights, and unselfish love. "My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs," he said ¹.
The Carter family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Carter Center. There will be public observances in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., followed by a private interment in Plains, Georgia. The final arrangements for President Carter's state funeral are still pending ¹.
