According to Le Monde, the 72-year-old will have to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence and his name will be included in the French national register of sex offenders. The court convicted the other fifty defendants, who received prison sentences ranging from 15 to three years.
In addition to Pelicot, the court found 46 other defendants guilty of rape, two of attempted rape and two of sexual assault.
One of the defendants, Jean-Pierre Maréchal, who later admitted to Pelicot's actions by drugging his wife for five years and inviting Pelicot to rape her, was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
The defendants have 10 days to challenge the decision, and Pelicot's lawyer said he plans to appeal.
