NNPCL detects 34 illegal refineries and 17 illegal pipeline connections in a week
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited says it has discovered at least 34 illegal refineries and 17 illegal pipeline connections in one week in the Niger Delta region.
In a documentary video posted on the official NNPCL YouTube channel, the company said illegal activities were dismantled in a series of operations between November 30 and December 6.

It was also reported that a massive illegal storage site was discovered at Okrika 7 in Rivers State, where authorities found crude oil stored in bags ready for the black market.
Illegal crude oil storage sites were also reported in Igi 3, Ibudiya 1, Eborcha and Ukua.
"The destruction of these sites serves as a strong warning that there is no safe haven for the theft of crude oil in Nigeria," the company noted. Fiberglass boats carrying stolen crude oil were also intercepted at Igi 4 and Okoloma Waterways in River State and Ukwua in ABIA State. They were then destroyed.
NNPCL disclosed that a total of 19 suspects were arrested and handed over to government security agencies for investigation.
Highlighting the recovery locations in the Niger Delta region, NNPCL noted that "the incidents of the week occurred in key corridors – 39 in the Central Corridor, 41 in the Eastern Corridor, four in the Western Corridor and 10 in the deep blue waters".
The national oil company has reiterated its commitment to end the chronic theft of crude oil in the country.

From August 17 to 23, 2024, the NNPC uncovered 72 more illegal refineries and arrested 42 suspects. Between August 31 and September 6, 2024, the national oil company dismantled 134 illegal refineries and 63 illegal pipelines. From November 23 to 29, NNPCL uncovered 65 illegal pipeline connections and 86 illegal refineries.
