Canada won six track and field medals at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago. Three of them came in an event that involved Andre De Grasse.
In 2021, the star sprinter took gold in the men's 200m and bronze in the 100m, and he also helped power Canada to silver alongside Aaron Brown in the 4x100m relay. De Grasse is heading back to the Olympics in 2024 with plenty of fanfare after narrowly winning the 100m final at Canada's Olympic trials.
Also heading back to the Olympics is long-distance runner Mohammed Ahmed, who won silver in the men's 5,000-meter competition in Tokyo. While age might work against the 33-year-old this time, he still easily won the qualifier at Canada's track and field trials.
Canada went from one track and field medal in 2012 to six each in 2016 and 2020. Can the nation make another leap in 2024? Take a look at the roster tasked with making that happen.
Here's the complete track and field delegation poised to represent Canada at the Olympics in Paris.
Canada men's track and field roster
Hammer Throw
Ethan Katzberg
Canada didn't send any men's hammer throw competitors to the Olympics in 2021, but the 22-year-old Katzberg appears to be a formidable contender after posting a stellar distance of 82.60 meters at the Olympic trials. The gold medal-winning distance in Tokyo was 82.52 meters, so Katzberg will be one of Canada's top track and field athletes to watch in Paris.
5,000m
Mohammed Ahmed
Ahmed won silver in the men's 5,000-meter competition in Tokyo, and he's back for another run in Paris.
While he's now 33 and didn't post a time in Olympic trials that rivaled some of the best from 2021, Ahmed still easily beat out the rest of the field and knows what it takes to compete on the biggest stage.
100m
Andre De Grasse
De Grasse was one of Canada's brightest stars in Tokyo, winning gold in the men's 200-meter and bronze in the 100-meter. He narrowly won the 100-meter final at the Olympic trials, with a photo finish giving him the victory, and De Grasse is headed to Paris looking to prove he hasn't lost a step from three years ago.
400m
Christopher Morales-Williams
Canada didn't send anyone to Tokyo to compete in the men's 400-meter, but Christopher Morales-Williams broke through by running the race in 45.44 seconds at the Olympic trials and finishing a full second ahead of the rest of the pack.
Morales-Williams' time likely needs to improve to contend for a spot in the final in Paris, but at just 19, he's one of Canada's emerging track stars.
800m
Marco Arop
Arop represented Canada in 2021 and reached the semifinals in the 800-meters. He looked like more of a contender at the Olympic trials, running the final in 1:43.71 and blowing past the rest of the pack.
Canada sent two runners to Tokyo to race the 800m, but as of now it will only be Arop heading to Paris.
200m
Aaron Brown
Brown secured his fourth Olympic bid with a win in the men's 200-meter final, after coming up short in the 100-meter. The two-time Olympic medalist ran the 200-meter final in 20.09 seconds at the Olympic trials, slightly better than the time he ran (20.20) in the Olympic final in 2021.
Canada women's track and field roster
Hammer Throw
Camryn Rogers
Rogers competed at the Tokyo Olympics, finishing fifth, and she won convincingly at the Olympic trials with a distance of more than 75 meters.
Steeplechase
Ceili McCabe
McCabe won the women's 3000m steeplechase by more than nine seconds at the Olympic trials, three years after narrowly falling short of the Olympic standard. The 22-year-old from West Virginia University is headed to the Olympics for the first time, though she will likely have to build on her trial time of 9:32.97 if she wants to contend for a medal.
Pole Vault
Alysha Newman
Newman qualified for the Tokyo Olympics but didn't take off on her attempts during the qualifying phase at the games, later citing the effects of a concussion she suffered earlier in 2021. Now healthy, Newman easily won the event at the Olympic trials and is in position to contend in Paris.
Shot Put
Sarah Mitton
Mitton competed at the Tokyo Olympics but finished toward the bottom in the qualifying phase with a distance of 16.62 meters. This time, Mitton posted a distance of 19.62 at the Olympic trials and appears to be much better positioned for contention in Paris.
100m
Audrey Leduc
Canada didn't get anyone into the women's 100-meter final at the Tokyo Olympics, but the hope is that 25-year-old Leduc can break through and reach the medal race in Paris. Leduc ran a 11.20 at the Olympic trials, well ahead of the rest of the pack, including 2021 Olympian sprinter Crystal Emmanuel.
400m
Zoe Sherar
Lauren Gale
Kyra Constantine was Canada's top runner in the women's 400-meter three years ago, but she finished fifth at the Olympic trials while Zoe Sherar and Lauren Gale both finished top-three after meeting the Olympic standard earlier in June.
Sherar (51.25) and Gale (51.35) easily cleared the rest of the pack at the Olympic trials, but each will likely need an improved time to reach the final in Paris.
800m
Jazz Shukla
Jazz Shukla ran the 800-meter final in 1:58.20, finishing well ahead of the competition and securing her first Olympic bid.
Canada sent three runners to the women's 800-meters in Tokyo, but only Shukla met the Olympic standard this time around.
100m Hurdles
Mariam Abdul-Rashid
Canada didn't send anyone to run the women's 100-meter hurdles in 2021, but Mariam Abdul-Rashid punched her ticket to Paris by running the final in 12.83 seconds at the Olympic trials.
A similar time in Paris could be enough to get Abdul-Rashid into the final, though medal contention will likely require an improved time.
200m
Audrey Leduc
Leduc already qualified for the Olympics in the women's 100-meter, but her time of 22.71 seconds in the 200-meter at the Olympic trials ensured she will compete in both events in Paris.
Leduc finished ahead of Zoe Sherar, who is headed to Paris to compete in the 400m but didn't meet the Olympic standard in the 200m. Canada sent one runner, Crystal Emmanuel, to Tokyo to run the 200-meter.
