Charges against countrywide protesters are dropped by the court.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the allegations of treasonous crime, conspiracy, and disturbance of public peace that were brought against 150 youths following the statewide protests in August.
Based on a request for trial discontinuance submitted by Mohammed Abubakar, the federation's director of public prosecution, on behalf of Attorney General and Justice Minister Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, Justice Obiora Egwuatu dismissed the defendants.
In accordance with its authority under section 174 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution as amended, the Justice Ministry assumed responsibility for the matter.
After the defence attorney had no objections, Justice Egwuatu granted the request and dropped the charges. He commanded the instant releasing the defendants from detention in prison.
On Monday, President Tinubu gave the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice instructions to stop the trial by dismissing the charges against the defendants and to make it easier for them to be released. The majority of the defendants are reportedly kids.
