Police attend to a pedestrian collision in the downtown area.
After a downtown collision earlier this morning that left a pedestrian critically injured, our Traffic Section is still looking into the incident.

Today, Thursday, October 31, 2024, at around 7:35 a.m., a car and a pedestrian collided at the junction of Third Avenue S.E. and Fifth Avenue S.E.

A man in his 60s is thought to have been driving an eastbound Tesla on Fifth Avenue S.E. when it crossed the intersection on a green light. A man in his 50s was running through the crossing outside of the designated crosswalk when he was hit by the car. He had tried to cross the intersection against the traffic light.

The pedestrian was taken to the medical facility in a potentially fatal illness.

The driver was unharmed and stayed at the site.

In this collision, speed and impairment are not regarded as contributing factors.

"Our top priority is to ensure the safety of all road users," says Acting Inspector Andy Woodward of the Traffic Section of the Calgary Police Service. Both cars and pedestrians should always slow down, drive carefully, and pay attention to their surroundings. Throughout the year, we are still collaborating with our community partners to assist teach Calgary residents safe driving techniques.

The Alberta Traffic Safety Calendar is promoted monthly by the Calgary Police Service. In October, the focus is on pedestrian safety.
