13 more countries have joined BRICS as partners, but not as full members, formally broadening the alliance.

The statement was made at the BRICS summit, which took place from October 22–24, 2024, in Kazan, Russia.

With the theme "Strengthening Multilateralism for Fair Global Development and Security," the bloc's 16th annual summit in 2024 focused on deepening economic ties with important rising countries.

"BRICS officially adds 13 new nations to the alliance as partner countries (not full members)," the bloc wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.

Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Myanmar, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam are among the nations.

The Ministry's spokesman Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, the minister of foreign affairs, revealed to The PUNCH Thursday that Nigeria is a BRICS partner.

Indeed. Indeed, Nigeria became a partner of BRICS," he stated.

BRICS, which stands for Brazil, Russia, India, and China, was extended to include South Africa in 2010.

Earlier in 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates joined the group as full members; all of them participated fully in this year's conference.

The group seeks to promote cooperation, security, development, trade, and investment among top economies in developing markets.

Nigeria's admission as a partner nation is consistent with earlier declarations made by Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar in November 2023, when he stated that the nation intended to use its sizable economy and populace to become a full member of BRICS within the next two years.
