In response to today's federal government immigration announcement, we have jointly released the following statement with Muhammad Yaseen, Minister of Immigration and Multiculturalism:
We intend to continue Alberta's longstanding tradition of embracing immigrants.
All provinces are currently facing unmanageable financial strains as a result of the federal government's careless and reckless open-border immigration policy, which allowed nearly 2 million newcomers to join Canada last year alone.
Our hospitals and schools are at or above capacity due to rising food, energy, housing, and other costs, as well as the tens of thousands of new residents who move to Alberta every month.
In order to meet these demands, the province needs a break from its rapid population expansion. Every province does the same.
These constraints would not be alleviated by the federal government's proposal to reduce the number of new permanent residents by just 105,000, given that they are bringing in nearly 2 million more each year.
Until further notice, we urge the government to reduce the annual number of arrivals to Canada from nearly 2 million to little around 500,000.
Reducing international students, temporary foreign workers, and asylum seekers should be Ottawa's top focus rather than lowering the number of economically selected migrants from individual provinces.
