According to recent data issued by the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta, the number of physicians in Alberta is growing at an unprecedented rate.
Adriana LaGrange, the province's minister of health, said on Tuesday that the number of registered physicians had increased by 4.5% from the same time last year.
There were 12,126 registered physicians in Alberta at the end of September, representing a net gain of 518 physicians from the previous year. The Calgary region had a large concentration of the growth.
In the third quarter alone, the province added 370 physicians, the highest third-quarter growth rate since prior to 2015.
"This record growth demonstrates the success of our efforts to recruit and retain physicians," LaGrange said. In particular, family medicine benefited from a roughly 5% increase in family doctors over the previous year, which LaGrange called "wonderful news for Albertans."
