NEWS RELEASE: Smith is urged to join the carbon tax court battle by the Taxpayers Federation

LETHBRIDGE, AB: Premier Danielle Smith of Alberta is being urged by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation to file a lawsuit opposing the federal carbon price alongside Premier Blaine Higgs of New Brunswick.

Kris Sims, the director of CTF Alberta, stated, "Alberta successfully led the fight against the 'No More Pipelines' law at the Supreme Court, and Smith should get our province to do the same against the carbon tax." "By applying the carbon tax unevenly, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is undermining constitutional accountability and punishing Albertans each time we pay our heating bills."

Higgs declared that New Brunswick would file a fresh lawsuit against the federal carbon tax if he were re-elected tax.

The Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick claims that the federal carbon tax "carve-outs violate the Supreme Court's ruling, and the tax makes gas, groceries, and essential services more expensive."

The federal government did not exempt other sources of home heating energy from the carbon tax when it announced last year that it would remove the charge on furnace oil for a period of three years.

The government of Nova Scotia states that "fuel oil makes up just 3% of residential heating energy across Canada." "The most widely used energy source for residential heating was natural gas."

Statistics Canada estimates that the average Alberta residence uses 2,930 cubic meters of natural gas annually. This indicates that the average home would save roughly $439 if the federal carbon tax were eliminated this year.

Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of CTF, stated, "When Trudeau announced his furnace oil carve out, he admitted the carbon tax makes life more expensive and he left 97% of Canadian families out in the cold." "Every premier ought to exert every effort to oppose the carbon tax."

According to a 2023 Leger poll, 70% of Canadians are in favour of eliminating the carbon price on all fuels used for home heating.
