The Chicago Statement, sometimes referred to as the Chicago Principles, is a collection of guiding guidelines designed to show support for free speech and expression on American college campuses. They became known as the "Chicago Statement" or "Chicago principles" after the University of Chicago adopted them in response to a report published by a designated Committee on Freedom of Expression in 2014. FIRE, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, spearheaded a campaign to persuade other universities in the nation to either adopt the principles or model their own based on comparable objectives.
A number of additional universities, including Stanford, Princeton, Purdue, and Washington University in St. Louis, have pledged to uphold the principles since 2014. By the time 110 American colleges and universities had "adopted or endorsed the Chicago Statement or a substantially similar statement," according to a September 2024 FIRE study.
The University of Chicago's Committee on Freedom of Expression was established in July 2014 in response to a number of incidents in which students at different schools attempted to stop controversial commencement speakers. President Robert J. Zimmer and Provost Eric D. Isaacs charged the committee with crafting a statement that would clarify the university's "overarching commitment to free, robust, and uninhibited debate and deliberation among all members of the University's community."
