Shortly after midnight on Thursday, a brilliant flare was sighted in the northern Philippines. A "very small asteroid" caught fire in the atmosphere, according to NASA.
It was "harmless" and measured about 1 meter (3.2 feet), but it produced a "spectacular fireball," according to the European Space Agency (ESA).
According to the ESA, asteroids of this size strike Earth around every two weeks, but this was just the ninth time one had been found prior to damaging the planet's atmosphere.
It was found on Wednesday by the NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey, which is operated by the University of Arizona.
Scientists dubbed it RW1-2024.
