On July 20th, Fort Smith RCMP responded to two serious incidents in the community. At approximately 4:30 a.m., a report of a home invasion involved three masked individuals armed with machetes, who threatened the resident before the latter managed to escape. Later, at 6:33 a.m., a second call reported an assault and robbery where a victim was threatened with a gun and robbed of cash and other goods.

Under Project Guardian, additional resources from Hay River RCMP were quickly deployed to assist. Further support from Yellowknife included members of the Territorial Crime Reduction Unit, Emergency Response Team, General Investigation Section, Forensic Identification Services, and Police Dog Services.
The investigations are ongoing, and no arrests have been made. The public is advised to anticipate an increased police presence in Fort Smith as law enforcement continues to gather information and work on these cases.
