As we continue to strive for free and fair trade with our international partners, including the US and China, it is equally important to foster a strong and unified economy within our own borders. One key step towards achieving this goal is to ensure seamless trade between all Canadian provinces and territories.
The western provinces have set a compelling precedent with the New West Partnership, a robust trade agreement that has facilitated greater economic integration and cooperation among its member provinces. Today, I am delighted to issue a formal invitation to all Canadian Premiers to join this pioneering agreement, building on the commitment made by Western Premiers earlier this year.
Established in 2010 by Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia, with Manitoba later joining, the New West Partnership Trade Agreement (NWPTA) has successfully eliminated numerous interprovincial trade barriers. By participating in this agreement, member provinces have pledged to recognize or reconcile rules governing trade, investment, and labour mobility, thereby creating Canada's largest barrier-free internal market.
We believe that expanding the NWPTA to include all provinces would have a profound impact on our national economy. By reducing interprovincial trade barriers, we can unlock new opportunities for growth, increase competitiveness, and improve the overall business environment. We look forward to working with our provincial counterparts to bring this vision to fruition and create a more cohesive and resilient Canadian economy.
