Barcelona and Spain's prodigious football talent, Lamine Yamal, has found himself at the center of a swirling controversy following reports and leaked footage from his extravagant 18th birthday celebration, held recently on July 13, 2025, in Olivella, near Barcelona. The lavish event, which saw numerous teammates and national squad members in attendance, has drawn significant criticism and is now under formal investigation by the Spanish government due to the alleged involvement of people with dwarfism as entertainers and unconfirmed reports of paid escorts.
The primary cause of the widespread outrage stems from the presence of individuals with dwarfism hired to perform at the private gala. The Association of People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias with Dwarfism (ADEE), a prominent disability rights organization in Spain, has vehemently condemned the practice, calling it "intolerable" and a perpetuation of harmful stereotypes. ADEE has publicly denounced the activity, stating that it "perpetuates stereotypes, fuels discrimination, and undermines the image and rights of those with achondroplasia or other skeletal dysplasias, as well as all people with disabilities." The organization has announced its intention to take legal action, asserting that such practices violate Spain's General Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which prohibits the use of individuals with disabilities for mockery or derision.
Carolina Puente, President of ADEE, expressed her dismay, stating, "It's unacceptable that in the 21st century, people with dwarfism continue to be used as entertainment at private parties, and even more serious when these incidents involve public figures like Lamine Yamal. The dignity and rights of our community are not entertainment for anyone, under any circumstances." She further emphasized that ADEE would "not remain silent" and would pursue both legal and social avenues to defend the rights of the dwarfism community.
In response to ADEE's complaint, Spain's Ministry of Social Rights has formally requested the prosecutor's office to investigate the matter. Jesús Martín, the General Director of Disability in the government, voiced significant concern, highlighting that "people with money, people with power, believe themselves to be unpunished. The law is for everyone, for the humble and for the powerful." Reports suggest that Yamal could face a substantial fine, potentially reaching up to £867,000, if found to have violated anti-discrimination laws.
Adding another layer of controversy to the unfolding scandal are allegations, particularly from social media model Claudia Calvo, that 12 women with "specific breast measurements" were allegedly paid to attend the party. While these claims remain unverified and separate from the official investigation concerning the dwarf entertainers, they have contributed to the negative public perception surrounding the event, painting a picture of an opulent and potentially ethically dubious celebration. Guests were reportedly asked to leave their mobile phones at the door, but a video of the dwarf entertainers heading into the party still emerged, fueling the initial reports.
However, amidst the widespread condemnation, one of the performers involved in the birthday party has come forward to defend their participation. Speaking anonymously to Catalan radio station RAC1, the individual stated that they and their fellow performers were treated with respect and were simply doing their jobs. "No one disrespected us. We were allowed to work in peace. I don't understand why there's so much hype," the performer commented. They further elaborated, "We're normal people who dedicate ourselves to what we love doing in an absolutely legal way." The entertainer also criticized ADEE, accusing the association of attempting to limit the employment opportunities of people with dwarfism, asserting that "ADEE is humiliating people with dwarfism" by seeking to ban a profession they willingly choose and enjoy. According to the performer, they danced, delivered drinks, and performed magic tricks, engaging in activities that are part of a legitimate entertainment industry.
This incident marks a significant test for the young footballer, who recently turned 18 and inherited Barcelona's iconic number 10 shirt. As a prominent public figure and role model, particularly to a young fanbase, Yamal's conduct off the pitch is under intense scrutiny. The allegations and subsequent official investigation could have considerable implications for his public image and potentially his career, regardless of the ultimate legal outcome.
The controversy underscores the ongoing global debate surrounding disability rights, ethical entertainment practices, and the responsibilities of public figures in an increasingly connected and critical society. The football world, and the wider public, will be closely watching as further details emerge and the investigation progresses.
