Today, in Rockhampton, the Governor-General presided over a poignant investiture ceremony, posthumously awarding the Victoria Cross for Australia to the late Private Richard Norden VC. The insignia was presented to his widow, Robyn, and their sons, Shane and Scott, in a moving tribute to Private Norden's extraordinary bravery and selflessness during the Battle of Fire Support Base Coral in Vietnam in 1968.

Private Norden's actions on that fateful day exemplified the finest qualities of leadership, courage, and valour. When his platoon was ambushed, he fearlessly ran into the line of fire to rescue his critically injured and fallen comrades, ensuring their safety and securing the enemy position. His unparalleled bravery saved the lives of many and inspired his fellow soldiers.

The Governor-General was honoured to present the Victoria Cross in Rockhampton, a choice made at the request of the family to celebrate Private Norden's life and legacy. The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including the Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, Richard Marles; the Hon Michael McCormack MP, representing the Leader of the Opposition; Chief of the Defence Force, Admiral David Johnston RAN; and other notable figures from the Defence Force, government, and law enforcement.

The Rockhampton Leagues Club was filled with family, friends, and Defence veterans, all gathered to pay their respects to Private Norden's ultimate sacrifice. The ceremony was a fitting tribute to his memory, and his widow, Robyn, was joined by her husband, Lance Freeman, and their sons, Shane, Scott, and Ben, to receive the Victoria Cross.

In presenting the insignia, the Governor-General acknowledged Private Norden's remarkable display of courage in the face of overwhelming danger. His actions will forever be remembered as a testament to the highest ideals of the Australian Defence Force. Today, we honour Private Richard Norden VC, a true hero of our nation, and celebrate his enduring legacy.
