Police tape surrounds a property on Rusholme Road where one person died in a fire on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.

Toronto Paramedic Services reported that five adult patients were taken from their homes. One person was confirmed deceased on the spot, while another was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Three more were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

According to Toronto police, the victim who died was a woman, but no further information regarding her name has been given.

Imran Sheik, a security guard who was on duty at a neighbouring building when the fire broke out, told CP24 that he noticed black smoke billowing out from the lower levels of the property but didn't hear Any type of alert ringing before firefighters arrived.

"There was no alarm sound, nothing like that was happening," Sheik recalled.

He stated that he witnessed firefighters carrying a guy and lady out of the house.

Pegg stated that the fire has been extinguished, and that fire investigators will now work with Toronto police and the Ontario Fire Marshal to identify what caused the incident and the circumstances surrounding it.

The property had no evident fire damage from the outside on Wednesday morning.

A TTC truck was dispatched to the area to provide shelter for the remaining residents of the residence affected by the fire.

Firefighters remained on the area this morning to monitor the situation.
