On Wednesday, August 21, a Canadian mining company revealed that its workers had discovered a 2,492-carat diamond stone in Botswana.
The rock was found and recovered, according to Lucara Diamond Corp., using X-ray technology, which at its Karowe diamond mine recognizes and retains "large, high-value diamonds."
After the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond, which was discovered in South Africa in 1905 and cut into diamonds, some of which are included in the British Crown Jewels, the discovery is the second-largest diamond ever discovered on Earth.
Mokgweetsi Masisi, the president of Botswana, is seen in footage broadcast on his official Facebook page on Thursday holding and gazing in wonder at the big diamond at his Gaborone office. Masisi remarks, "This is really precious. Well done."
Authorities claimed it was too soon.
