The Kawartha Lakes Community
On behalf of the Kawartha Lakes Police Service, I am writing to express our deepest gratitude for the heroic actions of two of our officers who responded to an emergency call on May 31, 2025. The incident occurred when a man reportedly jumped from Lindsay's Water Street bridge into the Scugog River. The swift and selfless actions of these officers undoubtedly saved the individual's life.
At approximately 6:05 PM on Saturday, May 31, 2025, police officers received multiple calls about a person in distress in the river. Upon arriving at the scene, they observed a man struggling to stay afloat and in obvious need of assistance. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, two officers, whose names are being withheld for privacy reasons, quickly donned flotation devices and bravely entered the water.
The officers managed to navigate the fast-moving and chilly river currents to reach the man, who was floating downstream. Their training and dedication to duty were evident as they secured the man with ropes while other officers held onto the lines from the shore to prevent them from being swept away. This coordinated effort showcased the professionalism and teamwork that is a hallmark of our service.
Once the officers had secured the man, the team on the riverbank successfully pulled all three to safety. The man was immediately attended to by the responding paramedics, who provided critical care for hypothermia before transporting him to Ross Memorial Hospital for further treatment. We are relieved to report that the individual is in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.
The two officers involved in the rescue were also evaluated by medical personnel. Despite the cold and challenging conditions, their commitment to duty saw them through the ordeal, and they were released later that evening. Their selflessness and quick thinking are a testament to their character and the values we uphold at the Kawartha Lakes Police Service.
We would like to thank the community for their vigilance in reporting the incident and for their ongoing support. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by our officers each day as they work tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and visitors in Kawartha Lakes.
We are incredibly proud of the officers involved in this rescue and their unwavering commitment to serving and protecting our community. Their actions exemplify the courage and compassion that we strive for in all our interactions.
