Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has been invited by the Nigerian Police for questioning over allegations related to terrorism financing, treasonable felony, and cybercrime. The police's invitation, dated August 19, 2024, comes after Ajaero's name was mentioned in an ongoing investigation. He was asked to appear at the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) Complex in Abuja on August 20, 2024.
This development follows a recent police raid on the NLC headquarters in Abuja, which the police justified by claiming they were searching for a foreign suspect involved in subversive activities. However, the NLC has strongly refuted these allegations, describing them as an attempt to intimidate the labor organization and its leadership. The NLC also criticized the police for not addressing Ajaero by his official title in the invitation letter and questioned the motives behind these actions.
The police have warned that failure to honor the invitation could result in a warrant being issued for Ajaero's arrest.
