Initial reports suggest that a passenger in a vehicle pointed an object, believed to be a handgun, at officers. Following the initiation of a traffic stop at 25 Avenue S.E., one individual fled the vehicle and was involved in a confrontation with officers, leading to the discharge of a service firearm.
The man, whose condition has been updated from life-threatening to life-altering but stable, is now receiving medical treatment at the hospital. Two additional occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody without incident.
The scene is likely to remain secured for an extended period as part of the ongoing investigation. Fortunately, no other officers or members of the public were harmed in the event.
ASIRT is an independent agency that examines situations where serious injury or death occurs during interactions with police. The investigation into this incident is standard protocol for such cases and further information will be provided as it becomes available.
